One reason why evil exists is because sin and suffering are connected. God uses suffering in order to shape our character. We suffer because sin is in the world. We also suffer consequences when we sin or others sin against us. And sometimes, we suffer for no apparent reason. But in all of these ways, God uses suffering to shape us into the image of His Son, Jesus Christ.
