Without the resurrection of Jesus, there is little reason to expect something better after death. Jesus taught extensively about a resurrection to come. He claimed, “I am the resurrection and the life.” Jesus also claimed that God the Father gave Him the authority to raise the dead. He proved his claim by the resurrection of Lazarus. In several passages, Jesus describes death as a state of sleep. Upon receiving word of Lazarus’s death, Jesus told His disciples, “I am going to wake him.” Why did Jesus compare death with sleep? And what should we, in turn, expect when we die?
